FAQ'S

Clinical research is scientific research that involves people. Scientists do it to learn more about diseases, as well as to look at new medical treatments or combinations of treatments that doctors already use. The goal is to find new and better treatments that help patients.

Some reasons to participate in clinical research are: to help learn about a disease, to help find new treatments, to receive a treatment that is not yet available to the public, or to receive a new treatment because the usual treatment is not working well.

Clinical research often involves medical treatments. But it is not the same as a standard medical treatment for a disease or condition. Scientists do research to learn and possibly improve treatment for all children in the future.

Many people work together to make sure that scientists conduct clinical research safely and correctly. A group called an Institutional Review Board reviews each new clinical research study at a hospital or medical school before the study begins. The Institutional Review Board, or IRB, is a group of scientists, doctors, other health care professionals and people from the community.

You may receive a new treatment for a disease before it is available to everyone else, you play a more active role in your own health care. As part of your treatment, researchers may provide you with more frequent medical care and health checkups. You may have the opportunity to help others get better treatment for their health problems in the future, as well as information about support groups and available resources.
